Chase will close Seaford branch

Since the pandemic, the Chase bank on Merrick Road, Seaford, has had two busy ATM's and safe deposit boxes, but no teller staff. Chase has announced that the branch will close on December 8, 2021. I suspect (but could be wrong) that the closure will end a hundred years of banking in part of that building.

---

Yes, part of that structure was once a funeral parlor operated by the nearby landowner, However, a 1936 article in the Brooklyn Eagle says that Mary Southard's funeral parlor was on Jackson Avenue. Okay, this post is going to need clarifications and corrections.

---

At one time, I think it was Fort Neck Bank. It was also Security National Bank. Whether Manufacturers Hanover Bank or Chemical Bank was there, I am confused. It would not surprise me that the sequence of banks topped five.

Comments are appreciated!

Seaford and the 2020 census

Seaford as a CDP or a census-designated place dropped from 15,294 residents on April 1, 2020 to 15,251, a loss of  43, on April 1, 2021.

---

I have been unable to find 2020 numbers for other analysis. I presume they will come later. Some interesting figures from the 2015-2019 American Community Service appear to be already out-of-date, such as the percentage of households with broadband internet (93%) and median household income ($133,278).

July 28, 2021, library board meeting

Tonight's library board meeting ran well on the GoToMeeting platform. All board members participated, led by Peter Ruffner. They approved some reconstruction on the roof, probably in October. Apparently, the improvement will include an interior ladder.

They approved a plan for Direct Access interlibrary loans.

They declared no environmental issues in some building projects requiring state approval.

They agreed to keep the 7 p.m. closing time Monday-Thursday, as evening meetings are virtual, and Driver courses are on weekend daytime schedule.

They discussed phone systems, rejecting companies of no record in other Nassau libraries. If I understood it correctly, they selected Mitel, which East Meadow uses.

Rains on Seaford July 3 celebration

I arrived late for the celebration at the Seaford Railroad Station. The Seaford Wellness Council organized and paid for the merriment.

Wantagh Independence Day Parade

Despite the downpour during the Wantagh Independence Day parade on Saturday, July 3, 2021, someone posted a series of excellent photos on the Wantagh.LI facebook page.

This link may work.

Graduation numbers

One hundred eighty-two seniors graduated from Seaford High School this June.  At Wantagh High School, 221 graduated.  I counted 557 graduates on the Massapequa list on Patch.

The website of St. William the Abbot parish school shows 30 in caps and gowns.

Memorial Day 2021

The pandemic cancelled Seaford's Memorial Day parade in 2021, but the Seaford American Legion Post on Penatiquit Avenue hosted a ceremony at 11 a.m. Former Congressman Peter King addressed an audience of more than a hundred people. Fr. Joseph Fitzgerald offered an invocation and Post Chaplain Charles Wroblewski the benediction. Commander Bill Hoehn described our reliance on those who served our country and died for it. At the end, the assemblage sang God Bless America with vigor.

Sterling Bank to Webster

Sterling National Bank of Montebello, New York, has announced that it will merge with Webster Bank of Waterbury, Connecticut. Situated on the northwest corner of Jackson Avenue and Merrick Road, Long Island Savings Bank (originally of Centereach) replaced Powell's Hotel. Astoria Savings purchased LISB in 1998, and Sterling bought out Astoria in 2017. Now Webster is in talks to purchase Sterling.

School and Library voting day, May 18, 2021

It appears that the Seaford NY school budget vote asks merely a yes/no vote on a 2021/2022 budget of $74, 717,812. There is one open seat on the Board of Education, but only one candidate, Andrea Parisi. The term is three years.

---

On the same ballot is the Library Budget, $2,185,366, yes/no.  There is one open trustee seat with one candidate, Margaret D. Grub. The term is five years.

Voting is at the elementary schools from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please click on the photo below to enlarge it.

Seaford Board of Education YouTube Channel

The annual NY  Board of Education budget meeting has sometimes been both illuminating and contentious. On May 5, 2021, it was held in the high school auditorium with admission limited to those who wore approved masks. Livestream on YouTube failed.

Go to the Seaford Board of Education Meeting Channel, linked HERE. Note that the May 5th meeting has one segment lasting 8:43 minutes (mostly a single statement) and another segment of 7:10 minutes.

Apparently the Board of Education cannot publish the appropriate link to an upcoming public meeting until they start the camera.

Merrick Road, 1968

In 1968, a committee published a commemorative volume," Seaford, Long Island, N. Y., 1643-1968, 325th Anniversary." At the Seaford Public Library, this book is shelved at 974.7247 S. I searched for addresses on Merrick Road and assembled the table below. This is meant to accompany the previous post, Merrick Road, 2021. As posts are in reverse chronological order, the previous post is below this one.

Some confusion arises west of Jackson Avenue, where the Long Island Savings Bank assembled a lot that included Powell's Hotel and a house with stores to the west. The banks, now Sterling, use the lowest address number.

Odd numbers are on the north side of  Merrick Road. Even numbers are on the south side.

Merrick Road, Seaford, 2021

Please make comments and corrections below this post or mail me at cjmcmann(at)msn.com

I distrust my guess work.

Only a few months ago, this corner building was a Lobster Shack. The adjacent building on Jackson Avenue appears to date from the 1920's, but I cannot find it in the Nassau County Land Record Viewer.

The Seaford Deli has been there several decades. The American Waffle House may have arrived about 2010.

Charlie's Pharmacy has been there for decades. Note the handy passage just east of it, which now has tables for outdoor dining.
