Seaford NY budget vote of May 19, 2026

Regarding the school board candidates, with two slots open, both candidates are running unopposed for re-election: Jimmy Chwe and Tricia Matulewicz (Mathews or son of Mathew, a patronym).

The Seaford school district budget proposal is linked HERE.  See also HERE. The budget total  is $86,302,965. The superintendant will earn a salary of $318,000. One source gives the district enrollment as 2,174. That does not mean that each student costs the taxpayers $39,697, because of other costs such as providing transportion to other schools.

Regarding the sole library board candidate, Margaret Grub is running unopposed for the slot she has held since 2016. The library budget for 2026-2027 is $2,480,922. The library budget  passed, 798-192.  That's 80% in favor, whereas in Massapequa the library budget garnered 62%.

 In 1968, a committee published a commemorative volume," Seaford, Long Island, N. Y., 1643-1968, 325th Anniversary." At the Seaford Public Library, this book is shelved at 974.7247 S. I searched for addresses on Merrick Road and assembled the table below. This is meant to accompany the previous post, Merrick Road, 2021. As posts are in reverse chronological order, the previous post is below this one.

Some confusion arises west of Jackson Avenue, where the Long Island Savings Bank assembled a lot that included Powell's Hotel and a house with stores to the west. The banks, now Sterling, use the lowest address number.

Odd numbers are on the north side of  Merrick Road. Even numbers are on the south side.

I distrust my guess work.

Only a few months ago, this corner building was a Lobster Shack. The adjacent building on Jackson Avenue appears to date from the 1920's, but I cannot find it in the Nassau County Land Record Viewer.

The Seaford Deli has been there several decades. The American Waffle House may have arrived about 2010.

Charlie's Pharmacy has been there for decades. Note the handy passage just east of it, which now has tables for outdoor dining.

Tim Hortons and the missing apostrophe

The Bolla Market which recently opened on eastbound Merrick Road in Seaford, just before the Hempstead/Oyster Bay town line, has a staffed counter for Tim Hortons coffee, donuts, and breakfast sandwiches. I noticed the missing apostrophe. The explanation is HERE.

Shortly after Expo '67, Quebec nationalists insisted on French-only signs. The apostrophe in Tim Horton's brand name was English, so it was dropped.

Seaford NY school budget passed

On May 21, 2019, the school budget for the next fiscal year passed, 1,015 to 404. The capital fund expenditure for grounds and doors passed 989 to 415. It seems that about 1,419 people voted, 73 fewer voters than in 2018.  Bruce Kahn (incumbent) and Kevin Devlin won seats without opposition.

Seaford election results

The election results in Seaford in 2018 generally followed the pattern of 2016, when Mr. Trump received about 65% of the vote in each of the election districts.
This year, there was a serious contest for the New York State Senate, in particular the seat of incumbent Seaford resident John Brooks. During October, many lawns in Seaford carried placards for Pete King (who won) and Jeff Pravato (who lost to John Brooks). Newsday briefly uploads to its website a detailed count of each election district in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, a useful tool which unfortunately disappears from the web within a few days. Therefore, I will try to give some Seaford numbers on this blog.
In that race for the 8th New York Senatorial District, Brooks received 38% in his own neighborhood around Maple Street, and Pravato 62%. Prevato's strongest districts were near the Massapequa Village Hall and south of Merrick Road in Massapequa. He won all of Seaford's election districts. The citizens of  Copiague, Amityville, Freeport, and much of Merrick, mainly away from the waterfront, chose John Brooks, who won the seat with 54% of the district.

Governor Cuomo received 59% of the votes in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. His lowest count nearby was 109 votes in Biltmore Shores, Massapequa, against 401 votes for Marc Molinaro. Cuomo won no election district in Seaford.

Kirsten Gillibrand received 67% of the Nassau-Suffolk votes, but lost Seaford with 37%.

February meeting of the Seaford school board

(Errors are possible in these notes of mine.)
At the Seaford school board meeting of 2.1.2018, the people rose to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in the all-purpose room of the Seaford Manor School. Dr. Adele Pecora, the superintendent, explained that the NYS review of our district gave no pejorative designation of fiscal stress, awarding it a laudable zero score. with regard to evaluating programs within the district, a committee looked into the multi-age first and second grade program at the Harbor school and decided to discontinue the program.

A representative from Custom Computer Specialists gave a 45-minute interesting, clear assessment of the "IT"environment within the Seaford school district. From the outset,he presumed the audience knew a few bits of jargon without explaining them, for example, the use of "ticket" to identify a complaint about a computer problem. Tickets are tracked. "In the industry, tickets must be resolved in 48 hours" = "It may take two days to solve the problem."

The school district is moving from an Apple environment to Windows 10. About 3,000 devices will be introduced. They may come with 3-year warranties, and extensions will have to be purchased. He made a reference to the SAMR model. I later found this chart explaining what he had discussed. Most current applications are browser-based, so they will be reachable both from Apple machines and Windows. In the future,the district may need more bandwidth, but bandwidth purchase has become less expensive.

The residents' comments included a request for foreign language study in the elementary schools, a remark about the number in first grade classrooms at the Manor School (24 and 27), an inquiry about security at the front lobby doors of the high school,and the service of a teacher to help an IEP student in each and every class he attends.

A fire near the Seaford Harbor School recently showed the usefulness of the new road.

Starbucks on Sunrise Hwy.

Just west of Wendy's on Sunrise Highway, Seaford, a construction fence has enclosed two properties available for development. At 3870 Sunrise Highway is a frame house built in 1933 as a residence; this property includes a second, smaller house of the same era, behind the first. They were converted to business use, most recently as Ray the Plumber.  If Sunrise Highway was constructed from Wantagh about 1928, these two may be the oldest structures on the short Seaford portion of Sunrise Highway.

Also enclosed by the fence is what was Kelley Flooring, a warehouse and sales office, built in 1956 at 3860 Sunrise Highway, listed on the Nassau County property site as a 6,171 sq. ft. building.

Each of the properties has 80-foot frontage on the highway.

Merrick Road n19 bus will have reduced service

As of April 9, 2017, the n19 bus route on Merrick Road will suffer service reductions. The new schedule is linked HERE. There will be no service during five mid-day hours. Thirteen "rush hour" trips will run.

I believe the Merrick Road route was first provided before 1950 by Utility Bus Lines, from Freeport to Patchogue.  I rode it several times through Seaford in July of 1960 or 1961. At that time, a zoned fare was in place, with the operator using a ticket dispenser after the rider stated his destination.

The loss of this service is a result of Supervisor Ed Magano's budget.

Sunrise Highway construction, 1928

I have been puzzled about the date of the construction of Sunrise Highway through Seaford. This 1914 map in the collection of the New York Public Library shows Rail Road Avenue running east from Seaman's Neck Road (not west) on what appears to be the current alignment of Sunrise Highway.

I have now chanced upon a brief news story in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of May 13, 1928, "To Start Seaford Section of Sunrise Boulevard." The announcement was made by August Weber, jr., the realtor developing Seaford Manor north of the tracks.  Laying the foundation for the highway had already begun, and streets in the Seaford Manor development had been started.

That news story may imply the Sunrise Boulevard connection from Wantagh, but it does not prove it.

The aerial photo below was taken before the rectory of St. William's parish was built in 1940. Note a narrower Sunrise Highway in the upper left. The photo may be enlarged by clicking on it, but the quality of this snapshot of a glossy on display at St. William's (2.12.2016) is poor. The view is east. Jackson Avenue crosses the foreground. Washington Avenue can be seen crossing Sunrise Highway.

Eight talking arrows, for safety's sake

The New York State Department of Transportation must be commended for installing loudspeakers in the button boxes of the eight pedestrian signals at Sunrise Highway and Washington Avenue, Seaford. Each emits softer beeps to help direct visually handicapped people to the button. When the large button is pressed, a loud speaker commands "Wait" and identifies which street one has requested to cross. When the visual walk signal appears (a white figure), the loudspeaker announces the street name ("Route 27" or "Washington Avenue" and declares "Walk sign is on the cross." Immediately, loud count-down beeps begin, which soften when the pedestrian signal reaches zero. 

Because there are four corners and a walker may cross in two directions from each corner, there are a total of eight buttons at this intersection.

In my experience, in Seaford it is safer to cross Sunrise Highway (at signals maintained by the N.Y. D. of T.) than at the pedestrian signals along Merrick Road (maintained by Nassau County).  For some reason, drivers have more flagrantly cut in front of me, a pedestrian, at the Merrick Road crosswalks than along Sunrise.
