Seaford NY budget vote of May 19, 2026

Regarding the school board candidates, with two slots open, both candidates are running unopposed for re-election: Jimmy Chwe and Tricia Matulewicz (Mathews or son of Mathew, a patronym).

The Seaford school district budget proposal is linked HERE.  See also HERE. The budget total  is $86,302,965. The superintendant will earn a salary of $318,000. One source gives the district enrollment as 2,174. That does not mean that each student costs the taxpayers $39,697, because of other costs such as providing transportion to other schools.

Regarding the sole library board candidate, Margaret Grub is running unopposed for the slot she has held since 2016. The library budget for 2026-2027 is $2,480,922. The library budget  passed, 798-192.  That's 80% in favor, whereas in Massapequa the library budget garnered 62%.

Is only one street in Seaford named after a owner of slaves?

Apparently, Washington Avenue is the sole street in Seaford named after an owner of slaves. Jackson Avenue is certainly not named after President Jackson.

A new Christian congregation on Jackson Avenue

A different Christian congregation has moved into the church at 2199 Jackson Avenue north of Merrick Road. For many years, this was the Episcopal church of St. Michael and All Angels. Note the 1962 cornerstone. I am under the impression that the    Episcopal diocese owns the parishes.

Google Blogger allows much editing of text. Because I am learning about this church  and its tenants, I stand correction and will edit.

---

At some time, a Prince of  Peace congregation worshipped here.

---

A photo taken in October, 2025, is below.  Note the 1962 cornerstone.  The Christian congregation is Salvation Tabernacle, which moved from Jamaica, Queens. Apparently, this congregation lacked parking in Jamaica and found this rental, which not only has its own parking but can use two nearby Town of Hempstead lots.

Long Island License Plate

Recently, the New York Department of Motor Vehicles issued a beautiful custom license plate for Long Island. It shows the Montauk lighthouse and adjacent shore line cliffs.  Be warned that the annual fees are costly.

I am fairly certain that Enock Yatri speaks after his wife in this video.

William Garnett Payne

William Garnett Payne was a prominent and prosperous citizen  of Seaford. I just came across a summary  of his life (1870-1940) in the website Find-A-Grave, linked HERE.

We lost Jack Healy

Sad to relate, Seaford and Wantagh lost the frequent volunteer of exemplary causes, Jack Healy of Spur Lane. Jack volunteered much skill and time in early website creation for St. William's parish and the Wantagh Fire District.

An obituary is linked HERE.

My only photos evidence his role in the U. S. Navy. Note the cap, depicting the USNS Comfort T-AH-20, a hospital ship.

Young priest Peter Duganzic created a website for the parish of St. William the Abbot. Upon Fr. Duganzic's assignment elsewhere, Jack Healy picked up the work and volunteered many hours of improvements and reconstruction, as the tools for websites evolved.

---
Many of Jack's fire department photos appeared in the Wantagh Citizen.

Zio's Cake and Cookie

New owners have arrived at Helmut's or Fehn's Bakery at 3649 Merrick Road, Seaford. Zio's Italian, similar to Dortoni of Levittown. On 10.20.2022, I bought an excellent loaf of pumpernickel bread. Zio means Uncle. Google reviews are linked HERE.

--

There are two parking spaces in front of the store and an adequate lot behind that red car, that is, east of the bakery. The photo was taken 1.30.2023 from the sidewalk in front of the Seventh Precinct at Neptune Avenue.

Paul Smith, Pastor of Methodist church

In July of 2022, I noticed a change on the sign in front of Seaford's United Methodist Church. The new pastor is Paul Smith.

July 4th Independence Day in Wantagh, 2022

As fitting, the Wantagh American Legion Post led the parade, followed by a long line of fire equipment.

Any photo may be enlarged by clicking on it. Next year, I will have to choose a location where the sun illuminates the banners. A better angle is along Island Road.

Above, the Wantagh Pipe Band.

The Wantagh Fire Department came, with equipment in company order, followed by the five helpful rescue squads.

Above, six members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians from Levittown. The tricolor, green, white, and orange, in 1848 was intended as inclusionary.

The Wantagh Masons (who meet in Baldwin) follow the Hibernians. For the aprons, please see https://www.freemason.com/behind-masonic-symbols-apron/
Again the sun angle on Park Avenue makes it difficult to read. Enlarge by clicking.

Please read THIS LINK, which describes the enthusiastic work of the Paumanacke Garden Club of Wantagh.

Because of the ceremonial swords and berets, I presume these are Fourth-Degree Knights of Columbus. The berets replaced fluffy chapeaux in 2017.

Another Hibernian group is Gl
ór na nGael (Voice of the Irish), promoting the Irish language.

Scou
ts of Christ Lutheran Church, which the parade will soon pass on Island Road.

I could not determine whether this band, apparently from Wantagh High School, was there officially or unofficially.  They played vigorously and competently.

Independence Parade in Seaford

On the morning of July 2, 2022, the Seaford Chamber of Commerce organized a parade north on Washington Avenue to the gazebo at the railroad station, where a few politicians gave speeches.

Any photo may be enlarged by clicking on it.

State Senator John Brooks and Town of Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray.

Frank McKenna and librarians from the Seaford Public Library.

Donald Paulson, accompanied by (who?) represents the Lions.
---
At the gazebo, after the speeches, Mike Di Silvio, President of the Seaford Wellness Council, posed an interesting series of questions about the fifty-six Signers of the Declaration. The audience replied with answers, mostly correct.
